Zwaarste is 5,3 magnitude...

Herstel; wel nieuws dus:

Moderate 5.3 magnitude earthquake in Southern California: USGS

A moderate earthquake of 5.3 magnitude struck near the California-Mexico border 15 miles north northeast of Brawley, California, at a depth of 2.9 miles, the U.S. Geological Survey said on Sunday.

The quake hit at 12:32 p.m. local time (1932 GMT) and was one of a series in the desert region on Sunday above magnitude 4.0, USGS said. There were no immediate reports of any damage, the San Diego County sheriff's office said.

Even geen tijd voor vertalen dus maar even zo.

The series of moderate earthquakes -- including several magnitude 5.0 and above -- were felt as far north as Orange County, east into Arizona and south into Mexico, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The USGS recorded more than two dozen earthquakes in Imperial County, many of them near Brawley. Officials said people reported feeling the quake in Yuma, Ariz., Lake Havasu as well as in Baja California.

The USGS's "Do You Feel It" system shows the quakes were felt as far away as San Diego, Temecula and San Clemente. The 5.4 quake was also felt in Moreno Valley, Indio, National City and Palm Desert.

The quakes could be felt in the press box at the Del Mar Race Track in neighboring San Diego County, where the $1-million Pacific Classic is scheduled later Sunday.

Between 10 a.m. and 12:50 p.m., the same area was shaken by quakes ranging in magnitude from 2.0 to 5.4, the USGS reported.

The burst of quakes took place roughly 16 miles from El Centro and 92 miles from Tijuana. In the last 10 days, there have been six earthquakes of magnitude 3.0 or greater centered nearby.

There were no immediate reports of serious damage or injuries from the temblor, though reports were still coming in.

The border region is known for frequent seismic activity, though the size of these quakes is larger than typically seen.

Here is a preliminary magnitude count of some of the quakes Sunday:
— 5.3  magnitude   at 12:32:59

— 5.4 magnitude at 12:31:23

— 5.3 magnitude at 12:30:54

— 3.7 magnitude at 12:30:27

— 4.7 magnitude at 12:21:04

— 4.6 magnitude at 12:20:04

The size of the quakes are subject to change as the USGS refines its data.

A handful of buildings in downtown Brawley had minor damage after an earthquake swarm rattled the area Sunday, officials said.

Capt. Jesse Zendejas of the Brawley Fire Department described the damage as "cosmetic" and said it occurred in at least three buildings dating to the 1930s. Crews were still assessing other areas of the city, he said, but no injuries had been reported. Imperial County firefighters were also assisting in the survey.

Thomas Jordan, director of the USC-based Southern California Earthquake Center, called the activity a "very active swarm" — something not unusual for the southern edge of the San Andreas Fault, which has seen similar occurrences in recent years.

This swarm could continue to rumble the region for a few days, Jordan added. "It's been pretty productive so far," he said. "It's a vigorous one. We got some pretty good-sized events." As data continued to roll in, Jordan said, scientists would study to swarm to learn how the sequence developed and what impact it could have on the fault. "We're always concerned where there is significant seismic activity because that means there is a higher probability of having more seismic activity," he said.

Update 21:26 UTC
- Based on the reports we receive from our readers, the shaking seems to have lasted only a few seconds. Short shaking is seldom damaging. The longer the shaking is lasting the more chance on damages.
- 17 aftershocks in between M2.5 and M4.3 in only 26 minutes

Update 21:16 UTC
- The last strong earthquake has currently been labeled M5.4 at a shallow depth of 8.9 km. Epicenter 5 km North of Brawley
- Intensities of MMI IV to VI are reported in the epicenter area

Update 21:10 UTC
- There are scattered power outages in the Brawley area and out at Naval Air Facility El Centro, said Marion Champion, spokeswoman for the Imperial Irrigation District. More than 1,000 customers were out of power temporarily. Crews are out checking for damage.
- Pioneers Memorial Hospital has been evacuated, and patient have been moved to the wound care center.  Though there has not been reports of major damage at the hospital, patients had asked to be evacuated because they were scared. Glass had been broken inside the hospital.

Important Update 21:03 UTC
A new strong M5.4 earthquake (preliminary value) had happened a few minutes ago
- The National Weather Service reports a preliminary Magnitude of M5.6!
- Epicenter a few km NNW of Brawley

Update 20:53 UTC :
- Residents in the San Diego area reported feeling the quake in places including downtown San Diego, Mission Valley, Santee and Chula Vista.
- Authorities in San Diego reported NO damage or injuries
- The Brawley seismic zone is very well known by seismologists for earthquake swarms. More M3 to M5 earthquakes can be expected, but it is unlikely that stronger earthquakes will appear. Of course stronger are possible but based on historic facts would be very abnormal.

Update 20:40 UTC :
- As you can see on the picture below, Brawley is a farming community with a patchwork of farming grounds. This kind of area can be very vulnerable for earthquake waves.
- SSN, the Mexican seismological agency has reported a M5.7 for the strongest quake (vs 5.3 USGS) and M5.2 vs M4.9 for the second quake.

This is what it feels like from someone there...

Sherrie in Brawley NOW: That's not even funny right now Bruce. They are coming one right after the other and are strong enough that my cabinet doors flew open and out came the dishes as well as the medicine cabinet stuff. one is hitting now as I am writing. My chi...na cabinet with my grandmothers china flew open and some of those things were broke as well as the glass in several pictures hanging on the wall. BUT !

The worst part is I am suppose to be a bad ass and I am scared to death of roaches and quakes. It's been so long I forgot how bad they are.My poor dogs are all over me wanting me to protect them and it's like , There's only room for one under this bed go find your own spot.
